This series of watercolor paintings on paper attempts to disperse images into transparency, representing the cycle of nature that is transitory due to erosion and decomposition, natural disasters, climate warming, and motion.
The choices of media, technique, and depictions expose a sense of loss, isolation, and solitude. Watercolor itself is a transparent paint, and its soft application and high-key tones suggests the state of flux seen in all living and non-living things.
In some works, the use of dividing the picture plane into quadrants was another tool used to communicate shift and change and was achieved by manipulating photographs I took of various local landscapes and then layering them in Photoshop. From there, I painted the works by hand, while referring to the manipulated digital images.
The Thoreau paintings were based on descriptions of landscapes in classic literature – and were painted sight unseen.
