This series of watercolor works began after a personal crisis in 2015. That experience deepened my understanding of our physical relationship to our world, and I began to associate landscape on a personal level, which influenced my painting practice.
Much of my more recent work combines literal natural disaster with personal tragedy. Since we share our origins with the nature around us, we can attribute and claim similar devastation and rebirth. Unlike my three-dimensional paintings on panel, physicality here is de-emphasized. Using transparent watercolor that, in many cases is almost colorlessness, I ‘let go’ of physicality and attempt to enter the realm of the meta-physical.
Some of the paintings were the result of a visit to a tsunami site in Japan after the great earthquake in 2011, as well as visiting burn areas in Southern California and flash flood zones in the Southwest.
Landscape becomes a metaphor for the body. There are over 50 paintings in this series that is ongoing...
